AZA Partner Demetrios Anaipakos Named Texas Lawyer Litigator of the Week
February 26, 2015
HOUSTON – In recognition of his work in securing a $15.7 million patent infringement verdict on behalf of underdog Rembrandt Wireless Technologies, Demetrios Anaipakos of Ahmad, Zavitsanos, Anaipakos, Alavi & Mensing P.C., or AZA, has been selected by Texas Lawyer newspaper as the state’s “Litigator of the Week.”
The case, Rembrandt Wireless Technologies LP v. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., et al., No. 2:13-CV-00213, was tried in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
The jury was decisive in finding electronics giant Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. had infringed on two of Rembrandt’s patents related to Bluetooth technology. In a move that Mr. Anaipakos noted was “highly, highly unusual,” the jury returned its Feb. 13 verdict after less than an hour of deliberations. In addition to the $15.7 million, Rembrandt will be entitled to a running royalty on every Bluetooth device Samsung sells during the lives of the asserted patents.
Mr. Anaipakos earned praise from Texas Lawyer for his representation of Pennsylvania-based Rembrandt, a company that Mr. Anaipakos told the jury “invests in innovation” and uses its expertise in intellectual property to “find that Rembrandt in the attic.” Additional comments appear in the story, “Litigator of the Week: $15.7 Million Patent Verdict Win“(subscription required).
“It’s a theme that a lot of defendants try to exploit. The way we dealt with it was to be completely up-front and candid about that fact. We told the jury early and often that Rembrandt was not a manufacturer of goods,” Mr. Anaipakos told Texas Lawyer. “Its business is investing in intellectual property.”
