AZA Partners in Houston Commercial Litigation Firm Earn Prestigious Trial Certification
January 2, 2011

HOUSTON – The Houston complex commercial litigation law firm of AZA, is pleased to announce that three partners have been Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

AZA’s Demetrios Anaipakos, Amir Alavi, and Todd W. Mensing are now among only 1.6 percent of Texas lawyers certified as civil trial law specialists. Nine attorneys were granted that high honor statewide after the last test and certification process, and three of them were AZA lawyers.

Overall, all of AZA’s partners are board certified, including Joseph Y. Ahmad, who is certified in labor and employment law, and John Zavitsanos, who also is certified in civil trial law. The Texas Board of Legal Specialization was established in 1974 by the Supreme Court of Texas at the request of the State Bar of Texas, and is the only governing board authorized to grant civil law and other certifications to Texas attorneys.

“A lot of law firms talk about going to trial, but our lawyers actually know how to do it and do it on a regular basis,” says Mr. Zavitsanos, founding partner of the firm. “Few Texas lawyers have the 20 trials under their belt, along with the vast knowledge required to pass this very difficult hurdle but AZA has four of them.”

Mr. Anaipakos represents clients in complex commercial and securities fraud cases, high-stakes employment matters, and catastrophic personal injury claims. He has tried cases in both state and federal courts, including several significant cases involving hundreds of millions of dollars in damages claims. He earned his law degree from the Stanford University Law School and his undergraduate degree, with highest honors, from Stanford University.

Mr. Alavi represents plaintiffs and defendants in complex commercial litigation in a variety of areas, including energy, securities, fraud and fiduciary responsibility, and commercial torts. He previously served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for a national technology company where he was responsible for legal operations, human resources matters, and merger and acquisition initiatives. Mr. Alavi earned his law degree with honors from the University of Chicago Law School and his undergraduate degree from Stanford University.

Mr. Mensing focuses on complex commercial litigation in a variety of areas, including energy, real estate, construction, fraud and fiduciary responsibility, breach of contract, and business torts. He also represents executives in employment matters, and companies and individuals in catastrophic personal injury cases. Mr. Mensing earned his law degree, with honors, from The University of Texas School of Law, where he graduated in the top 10 percent of his class. He earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Stanford University.

AZA is a Houston-based law firm that is home to true courtroom lawyers who provide clients with a formidable track record in complex commercial litigation including energy, intellectual property, securities fraud, construction, and business dispute cases. AZA is one of only 32 firms in the U.S. to be recognized as “awesome opponents” in a nationwide poll of corporate general counsel who were asked to name the law firms they hope their companies never have to face in court. In fact, AZA has been hired more than once by the same companies the firm has prevailed against at trial.
