Quality Hiring by Houston Legal Boutique AZA Noted in News Story on Buyer’s Market for Law Firms
September 23, 2013

HOUSTON – Accomplished Houston attorney John Zavitsanos, a name partner in the commercial litigation boutique Ahmad, Zavitsanos, Anaipakos, Alavi & Mensing P.C., or AZA, recently was interviewed by the Houston Chronicle about the high level of talent his firm hires.

The story, “New lawyers face law of diminishing returns” (Houston Chronicle subscription required), looks at the current job market for attorneys. Writer L.M. Sixel explains that there’s a buyer’s market for law firms, with salaries and expectations waning for most newcomers. As the article puts it, “It’s a tough time for newly minted lawyers. Many graduates are having trouble finding jobs, and starting salaries are lower than they’ve been in years.”

But Mr. Zavitsanos notes that AZA is paying unusually high salaries and hiring top-credentialed young lawyers and laterals.

“AZA is paying a first-year starting salary of $170,000, including a $5,000 signing bonus, to next year’s class. The new lawyers also get an iPad, iPhone and laptop,” the story notes.

Featured in the article along with Mr. Zavitsanos is University of Houston Law Center student Ward Goolsby, who is fourth in his class and editor in chief of the Houston Law Review. Mr. Goolsby split his summer clerk time between Norton Rose Fulbright and AZA. After receiving job offers from both firms, Mr. Goolsby chose AZA, where he will begin work in 2014.

Mr. Zavitsanos told the Houston Chronicle that AZA has zeroed in on the top law schools and top students. AZA regularly recruits new hires from such esteemed schools as Harvard Law School, University of Chicago Law School and University of Texas School of Law.

Ahmad, Zavitsanos, Anaipakos, Alavi & Mensing P.C., or AZA, is a Houston-based law firm that is home to true courtroom lawyers with a formidable track record in complex commercial litigation, including energy, intellectual property, securities fraud, construction and business dispute cases. AZA is recognized by U.S. News & World Report and The Best Lawyers in America as one of the country’s best commercial litigation firms in the 2013 listing of the nation’s leading law firms. National corporate counsel named AZA one of the country’s best in client service among law firms serving the Fortune 1000. AZA has been hired on many occasions by the same companies the firm has prevailed against at trial. Read more at http://www.azalaw.com.
